Mike Walker

Many years ago, Mike Walker – owner and “operator” at the time of the Walker Agency, which was one of the big PR outfits in the outdoor community – helped a young writer/fisherman who proudly went by Capt. Mike Holmes to get on the Yamaha guide program, then later switch to the same company’s writer’s discount program. I converted my 24 foot deep vee boat from stern-drive to bracket power with a 220+ Yamaha, and never looked back. In a couple of years I went with a new, all fuel injected 250 hp Yamaha. When it came time to re-power my old 31 Bertram, Mike and I were discussing mounting a pair of big outboards on it, but when he let the Yamaha account go, I went with diesels instead. At the time of his death Mike was president of the Outdoor Writers Association of America, and in years past he was instrumental in my joining both the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association, and Boating Writer’s International.

Mike was 64 when he passed, and a gentleman who will be missed and remembered.
